NLC Wrap-Up

More than 6,500 members, advisers and guests from across the nation put their Imagination in Action for the 2011 National Leadership Conference (NLC), July 10-14. FCCLA members and chapters were recognized at NLC for being national program award winners, scholarship recipients, increasing membership, and more! Attendees also participated in youth sessions, adviser professional development, and competitive events.

The National Executive Council carried out the theme “NLC Live” through the general sessions, as they went behind the scenes to showcase The Ultimate Leadership Experience! The conference highlighted several speakers who inspired and motivated attendees about the power of potential, including, Chef Jeff Henderson, Patrick Kasper, and Albert Mensah. STAR Events, FCCLA Contests, and Family and Consumer Sciences Knowledge Bowl were an exciting way for members to showcase and be recognized for their hard work on projects they completed throughout the year.

Conference delegates also conducted business of the organization. They elected the 2011-2012 National Executive Council and passed two bylaw amendments regarding voting delegates and voting. At the closing general session FCCLA was able to donate a check totaling $267,225 to Children’s Miracle Network. The sights and attractions in and around Anaheim also had members excited to be at NLC. From Disneyland to Los Angeles tours, there was something for every member to enjoy. The friendships, memories, and leadership skills gained at the 2011 National Leadership Conference will last a lifetime!

Leadership Academy- New!

On Tuesday, July 12th, students from around the country came together for the Leadership Academy. Caroline Weir, Leilani Mullins, Andrew Schantz, and Kristen Ray, members of the Leadership Training Team, all put on these workshops. Workshops focused on building certain leadership skills such as professionalism, networking, and communication. Not only that, some of the workshops focused on The Student Leadership Challenge’s areas of “Enable Others to Act” and “Encourage the Heart.”

Students participating in the session worked together to complete tasks and build teamwork. Games and activities were utilized to encourage active participation and skill building. One of the games featured had to do with fostering collaboration. The members began with an icebreaker where they had to add on to what the person before them said, creating an uncooperative story. The game produced some giggles and achieved its purpose of bringing members together for some fun and collaboration, but the story was nonsensical so was followed up by one that did make sense. Then, they wrapped up by making a cooperative story to bring together the ultimate goal and lesson of collaboration.

By participating in these sessions, students got a better overall understanding of leadership skills that they possess and can develop even further. Students were able to work together, network, and have fun!

National Officer Elections

The 2011 National Officer Candidates (NOC) rocked it at the 2011 FCCLA National Leadership Conference! The twenty candidates were selected from the total number of candidates by the nominating committee. The speeches were held in two groups, one in the morning and one after lunch. All of the speeches were memorized and had to be three minutes or less.

Each candidate added their own flare to the election process with their “one-of-a-kind” speeches. They were very polished in their business attire as they graced the stage. The speeches focused on how FCCLA promotes diversity and evolves to changing times.

While listening to the speeches, members and voting delegates were inspired by the accomplishments of the NOC’s. Their speeches gave insight into the many opportunities that FCCLA offers. Once done with the speeches, the candidates headed over to participate in the FishBowl, where the voting delegates posed questions to the candidates. Elections took place later on in the evening as each state casted their vote for the ten candidates. Results were announced the next morning after a run-off was held. The ten newly elected National Officers are listed below:

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2010 National Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois! FCCLA celebrated 65 Years of Leadership in the best way possible- with members, advisers, alumni, staff and guests from all over the nation.

Congratulations to the 2010-2011 National Executive Council and the outgoing NEC for doing a wonderful job onstage and during the week. Also, congratulations to all Competitive Events participants for the hard work and extreme dedication put into the conference. Your preparation paid off and everyone at FCCLA is very proud. Keep working hard and continue doing great thigns in your schools and communities.

It was a great pleasure for FCCLA to present a check for over $241,000 to Children's Miracle Network and hear from our own miracle child, Aidan. FCCLA will once again partner with Children's Miracle Network for the 2010-2011 National Outreach Project. All chapters and states are encouraged to continue fundraising for another year so we can help impact the lives of sick and injured children.

Nashville Shores

One of the many activities FCCLA members participated in at Nashville shores was a battle of strengths in an intense game of tug-a-war. Other activities offered to members included kayaking, water slides, sun tanning, dancing and late tours. Overall members and advisers alike had a great time at Nashville Shores.

Once again, members, chaperones, advisors and volunteers had little time to rest! Everyone was on the move, competing in STAR Events, attending workshops, and checking out the exhibits here at the meeting. This afternoon the delegation assembled for the Business Session. Here we heard a summary of the NEC's activities, membership activity, and the organization's financial status.

The NEC let us have another glimpse into the "Real World" of FCCLA. It will be exciting to see who wins the competition taking place in the Real World FCCLA house. While we don't know who will win the Real World Competition until the Closing General Session, winners of several scholarships and national program awards were announced today. Congratulations to all of the winners! Your projects truly helped FCCLA move Beyond the Label!

At the close of this session, our 2009-2010 National Officers were announced. I apologize for not writing down the names of the new officers, but I can tell you that officers were elected from the following states: At Large-- South Carolina, South Dakota, Missouri, Florida, Oklahoma, Kentucky; Central Region--South Dakota; North Atlantic Region--Connecticut; Pacific Region--Colorado; Southern Region--Texas;

After the Business Session adjourned, members headed to Nashville Shores for the FCCLA Lakeside Beach Party!

Hicks, Tree Huggers and Divas...Oh my!

Today was full of presentations, hicks, divas and grease monkeys. The national officers did a great job with their skit and really got the crowed pumping with their great dancing skills. Tomorrow we will see how FCCLA has helped the group of reality stars go “beyond the label.”
The guest speaker, Sergeant Ken, motivated members to be leaders. During his speech Ken challenged a group of members to do pushups on stage for one minute. The entire audience was cheering them on and created even more excitement in the room.
With the energy in the room jumping and the party hopping, the national officer candidates introduced themselves to the delegation for the first time.
After the session, states got together and decided who to cast their vote for in the 2009-2010 national officer team. After all was said and done, the hotel was again buzzing with pin trading and members networking.
Tomorrow is another day of STAR events, workshops and an evening at Nashville shores. So in true Nashville fashion, ‘night ya’ll!

Monday General Session

Monday's General Session at the 2009 National Leadership Conference kicked the meeting off in a rockin' way! Lights, music and excitement filled the room as almost 6,000 attendees shouted state cheers, traded pins and participated in the opening general session. This electrifying session truly made it clear that members are taking FCCLA beyond the label and into the future for our families, careers and communities.

The National Executive Council energized the audience with awesome dance routines, great skits and recognzing members for their accomplishments in national programs and the classroom. SGT. Kent Weichert challenged members to go beyond the labels given to you in everyday life to become a more effective leader. His keynote address focused on the military's model for leadership training and included physical activity, photos and stories from his time spent serving our country as a soldier both at home and overseas.

The candidates vying for positions on the 2009-2010 National Executive Council closed the session by introducing themselves on stage. After state meetings tonight, each state's voting delegates cast their ballots to determine your new National Officers. The results of these elections will be announced tomorrow during the business session.

Monday Morning in Nashville!

Hello readers! Today is going to be a busy day here at the Opryland Hotel! This morning, our Regional and At-Large Candidates for National Office will present their speeches and answer on-stage questions. These presentations,along with interviews that took place yesterday will help voting delegates while casting their votes for your 2009-2010 National Executive Council!

STAR Events also get underway today. I've seen many members carrying display boards, manuals and portfolios throughout the hotel, so these next two days will be very busy! Good luck to all participants and a big thank you to all of the room consultants, evaluators, national staff members and volunteers who make this portion of the meeting possible!

National Leadership Conference 2009 Kicks-off

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America had descended on Nashville, TN for what is sure to be a great event. Many delegates arrived yesterday or early this morning and spent the day today seeing the sights and exploring a little of what the “Music City” has to offer.

While some took off to learn a little toe-tapping line dancing at the famous “Wildhorse Saloon” others embarked on the country music tour to learn what gives Nashville its “music city” name.

While some were seeing the cool sights of Nashville it was heating up in the kitchen as competitors in the culinary arts STAR event showcased their culinary skills

Incoming state officers learned what it means to be the Ultimate leader in USA Leadership Training while the outgoing officers learned about mentorship and continuing the ultimate leadership experience beyond FCCLA.

STAR event competitors got down to business and registered for events that will start bright and early tomorrow morning and continue through Wednesday evening. Sprinkled in between are workshops, general sessions, exhibits, spotlight on projects and pin trading. Overall, tomorrow looks like a great day filled with fun, friends and the ultimate leadership experience.

The 2009 FCCLA National Leadership Conference (NLC) is almost here! This year, two FCCLA alumni will be blogging about their experiences daily.
